Two Masters by Jaclyn Weist – Autumn/Halloween Countdown Blitz 2020

Jaclyn is an Idaho farm girl who grew up loving to read. She developed a love for writing at a young age and published her first book in 2013. She met her husband, Steve, at BYU, and they have six happy, crazy children who encourage her to keep writing. After owning a bookstore and running away to have adventures in Australia, they settled back down in their home in Utah. When Jaclyn isn’t herding her kids to various activities, she serves on the board for her local arts agency, runs a writing workshop, and stays up late writing books in various genres.

Jaclyn’s Young Adult books include The Luck Series, Lost in a Fairy Tale series, Magicians of the Deep, and Two Masters.

Gwen’s family had only one rule—stay out of Grandma’s garden. And if it wasn’t for her annoying cousin, she never would have broken it. Everything seems fine until she pulls an ancient book from the old well inside.

And pays for it.

A dark magic is unleashed from its prison, and Gwen becomes its new host. Now, not only does she have to learn to use her own magic, she must also keep the dark magic from taking over her soul. Some rules are made to be broken. But breaking this one may just destroy the world.

Snippet:

I crept closer to the well. All the horror stories told by older cousins, all the nightmares I’d had of this place when I was a little girl, came back to me in a rush. Pure, unadulterated fear screamed at me to run. But while I could leave right now—say that the bucket hadn’t pulled up anything—that would mean Craig would win. I couldn’t let that happen.
“Gwendolyn.”
I jumped back. I was sure . . . no. There was no way I’d just heard my name. My heart beat wildly as I took a step toward the well. The rocks around it were rough and dug into my hands as I leaned over the side, expecting . . . something. I wasn’t sure what, but I couldn’t help the twinge of disappointment. If there was actually water, it was deep. There was nothing but blackness. I wanted to relax and told myself there was no way I’d heard a voice, but it continued to echo through my mind.
“Come on, Gwen. We need to get out of here.” Josh’s voice was frantic now.
“I’ll be there in a sec.” Curiosity had won. I needed to know what was down there. It was like something had a hold on me. Terror gripped me as I grabbed on to the handle and yanked on it. The pulley protested, not having been used for who knew how long.
The bucket slowly came into view, and while there was clearly no baseball, the bucket wasn’t empty. A book sat nestled inside, as if it belonged there. It should have been wrinkled and falling apart, but it looked untouched by the water. The title was worn, but I could just make out the ancient lettering on it. The word “Spell” caught my attention. My stomach dropped. No way. This was impossible. Maybe Craig was playing some kind of trick on me . . .
“Gwen! Seriously. Get out of there. Mom and Grandma are back. You know they’ll freak if they see you in there.”
I kept turning the crank until I could reach the book. It was leather bound with runes around the edges. A latch with a lock kept the book shut tight. The fact that the book still looked brand new should have stopped me, but I had to know how it got there. It was cool to the touch, but warmed quickly under my fingers. This couldn’t have been one of Craig’s tricks.
“Gwendolyn. You saved us. We knew you would.”

Putting her body in motion before her brain is in gear creates a mountain of problems for 12 year-old Ginnie West. She is certain that defending her twin brother, Toran, from the biggest bully in sixth grade was the right thing to do. But Ginnie couldn’t be more wrong.

She quickly figures out that Toran doesn’t appreciate being rescued by a girl any better than Pierce likes being knocked down by one. When Pierce seeks revenge on Ginnie, Toran sets aside his anger and helps her plot a playback prank at Pierce’s house.

Sadly, Ginnie learns that Pierce has a reason for being a bully when she sees his dad drop him to the floor like a ragdoll with one awful blow to the chest. Realizing he’s a boy in big trouble, Ginnie switches gears and decides to be his ally, even if he won’t let her be his friend.

What reviewers are saying about this book:
*Like Anne of “Anne of Green Gables,” Ginnie is a character you can’t help but love.

*I couldn’t put these books down. I was not only entertained, but inspired.

* An excellent book that deals with the sensitive topics of bullying, abuse and forgiveness. It is action packed and full of raw emotions.

*Bucheger does an amazing job of writing this story but without giving a cookie cutter answer to the problems Ginnie faces.

When danger surrounds a motorcycle club princess and her bad boy protector, will they battle to keep their love alive?

The job is simple. Babysit a MC princess until it’s safe for her to return to Ireland. What Doc T doesn’t expect is to fall for the sassy yet innocent Isadora Walsh… but he can’t have her. It’s the club’s rule.

Isa never knew about her father’s role in Macha MC until it threatened her life. Spirited away to sleepy Snowshoe, Colorado, she craves the bad boy assigned to protect her nearly as much as she’s determined to get away from club life.

When danger crosses into Snowshoe and alliances are questioned, Isa and Doc are thrust into a MC war that results in bullet holes and kidnapping. Can Doc protect Isa or will the Macha princess do the saving?

Doc stepped forward, but Isa interrupted his act. “Do you like breathing?”
        Cueball smirked. “Last I checked.”
“Then I suggested you back off before the Belfast president finds out you’re drooling over his daughter.”
Doc bit back a laugh at the expression on Cueball’s face. The other man stepped away, hands up in surrender. “No harm intended.” He glanced to Doc. “They grow them feisty in Ireland.”
He jerked his chin up. “Wouldn’t have it any other way, brother.”
Cueball chuckled and maintained his path toward the bedrooms. When Doc turned back around, he met Isa’s glowering face. The more time he spent with her only reiterated his longing to put her over his knee. She was sassy when needed and that stirred up the most primitive sensations in his mind. Suddenly, being uprooted from his familiar role as the club doctor wasn’t so bad.
        “Are all MC members horndogs?”
Doc took a step closer and tugged on the bottom of her shirt. It barely covered her navel, leaving plenty of skin available to tempt any man. “Have you seen yourself, Isa? You’re the prettiest girl in the clubhouse.” His eyes fixed to her lips where she was rubbing them together. “And that fire of yours only makes it hotter.” He reached over and ran his knuckles down the side of her neck, goosebumps spreading at his act. “Because we all like to play with fire.”
“What if I burn you,” she whispered, the sound airy and uncertain.
He chuckled and stepped away. “You’re worth the scars, princess.”
